Welcome to one of the last instalments of our winners profiles from October 2012 Best of Vintage Manchester Awards, Vintage Twists won the Best Newcomer category.
Vintage Twists was born out of a love story: a love for wonderfully flattering clothes and the love of one chap for a good woman.
After working as an academic in Belgium for several years, Vintage Twists founder Jason Rutter, decided that fine chocolate and Belgian beer aside being at home in Manchester with his partner was the way forward. Turning a big change into an epic one, he decided to swap career as well as country and see if he could make a living selling fabulous frocks for woman who loved vintage-style glamour.
In November 2011, Vintage Twists launched its online shop placing an emphasis on providing the feel good factor that comes when one looks in a mirror and thinks, ‘Now me and that dress look really good together!’
Six months later Vintage Twists opened in the good-old-fashioned, real world when they took on a unit on the first floor of Afflecks where they got their chance to meet customers face to face. Now they have a wonderful mix of returning and new customers and a stock including brands such as Glamour Bunny, Miss Candyfloss, Limb, Pin Up Girl, Steady and Heartbreaker.
Since winning Vintage Manchester’s Best Newcomer award, plans for their second year are still a bit hush-hush but include working on an in-house label and a made-to-measure service. They are also looking to work more closely with individual designers and producers.
At the end of 2012, Vintage Twists also took over Pinkies Cafe in Afflecks giving it a new look, feel and menu. Their milkshakes are already causing quite a stir! Keeping busy, Jason is in Afflecks most days and his beautiful other half can usually be found helping out in Vintage Twists on Saturdays. They do occasionally manage a day off together too!
