Vintage PR Giveaway

Magpies and I, the team behind Altrincham’s Vintage & Craft Market who helped set up No16Vintage on The Downs, have launched another business supporting the talents of independent businesses – Magpies and I PR.

Magpies And I was set up in 2011 by sisters Sian and Gail Titchener, run regular vintage and craft events in Greater Manchester and throughout the South West of England.

Following the success of their markets – the Altrincham one has trebled in size in the last 18 months and won support from Mary Portas; and they’re currently shortlisted in Pretty Nostalgic magazine’s ‘Best Handmade And Art Market’award – the sisters have launched a press release service aimed at vintage, handmade and art businesses who want more coverage and publicity.

‘No matter how good their product, small businesses can struggle to get themselves known,’ says Gail. ‘Twitter is one way to raise your profile, but you need to promote yourself on a wider scale if you really want to succeed. This can be daunting, especially if your talent lies in making and doing rather than writing…and of course, there’s only so many hours in a day.’

gail

Gail’s career has included copywriting, features writing and  being PR executive, so she is more than equipped to get your ideas into written form and into the public realm.

‘After helping several stallholders – such as local illustrator Laura Clempson who runs Cupcakes For Clara and can be found at notonthehighstreet.com – to write press releases on an informal basis, I realised this was a way I could combine both areas of my work.’

Gail wanted to make it a pay as you go type service as opposed to a long contract which traditionally is how PR agency’s work. This makes it much more affordable for small businesses just starting up. ‘That way you only have to invest when you’ve got something really newsworthy to say.’

Magpies And I have recently worked with This is Lullaby which creates beautiful baby clothes in traditional heritage fabrics as an alternative to the mass-produced garments on the high street; Plum and Pigeon who make charming vintage style dresses and top with a modern twist and Altrincham’s London Tap Gallery.

So what is the prize?

The  package on offer in our giveaway is worth £150 and includes Gail having a chat with you; finding out the angle/news story that you want to get out there – or alternatively she can help you to find an angle if you’re unsure – and writing it up for  you.

She’ll then discuss the finished piece and make any changes before contacting and distributing it to a list of relevant local/national editors. Here’s an example of a happy customer of Gail’s.

All you need to do is leave a comment below describing your vintage type business and you’ll be entered into a draw. We’ll give you until 22nd February 2013 to enter.

For more information on how Magpies and I can help you, contact Gail Titchener on 07795 167902, or email: altvtgmarket@hotmail.com

Morning! I recently launched my business, The Vintage Wardrobe. I sell women’s hand picked vintage clothing from the 1960s to the early 90s. When choosing the pieces, I’m incredibly particular about the quality and wearability of a garment. This is to ensure that I’m providing great vintage of a high standard. Any support that Vintage Manchester could offer would be fantastic!

    Thanks,
    Sameera

    Hi,

I started Seaset Jewellery back in November 2012, pieces are inspired by my love of the sea. Unique jewellery created from beach materials including all manner of flotsam and jetsam; driftwood, shells, and sea glass, incorporated with a range of precious and non precious metals. All of my work is handmade by me and many pieces are one-of-a-kind. I would love to hear how you could help me to get my work into galleries and advice on shows, which to attend how to set up etc.

    Fingers crossed and thanks!

We are a new Anglo-Japanese family run business selling hand crafted Japanese products via our web shop at http://www.popup-Tokyo.com and also at Didsbury and Castlefield markets. Although the items we sell aren’t vintage, they are all hand made and we work directly with the designers!

Any help with letting people know about our business would be great!

Hello – I would love to be notified of any events or fairs
Where I can display / sell my vintage and vintage Inspired clothing!

Hi – is this open to people who are STRICTLY vintage? If its flexible Id love a bit of extra help promoting my make up artistry and hairdressing, especially the hairdressing ( cutting and colouring.. both on a vintage, modern and cruelty free bias ) I have done a lot of photographic work in vintage shoots, due to the current trends, but I cant say Im COMPLETELY vintage biased, as I work with all sorts of people from film crews to school mums, creating any looks from ‘tramp to vamp’ .. but the imagery I like to use to promote my work is retro / vintage /quirky illustration imagery as per my hairdressing business card. .. and this is why I think vintage PR experts would promote me in the best way, to the right clientele. Other than me though.. I love the first entry – the mexican van!! ace! they should get it!

    Hi Gail,

As you know I too have an outlet within No16 and have just moved spaces to a bigger, brighter spot.(Re-launch party 16th Feb!) My business is solely the sale of vintage and antique jewellery, from kitsch and funky costume to gorgeous real pieces. I have a little shop on Etsy, my own website, the concession at No16 and am currently advertising on Voutique. I also do parties in people’s houses, where I provide a glass of Prosecco for guests, set out my stall and give a little talk about the history and symbolism in jewellery, using current items in my collection. Given that I have no business background at all (previously a solicitor in the civil service!)I think I’m doing a lot of things right, but really need to reach a wider audience, spread my reputation and get noticed! There is only so much twittering and facebooking I can do. I need some professional ideas!

We’ve recently set up a business called It’s Vintage Fun and Games which is just that! We hire out vintage and vintage style games, indoor, outdoor, pub and parlour games for a variety of events such as weddings, parties, corporate events. Games include a 24′ wooden skittle alley, coconut shy, croquet, bagatelle, shove ha’penny, table top croquet to name just a few and we would appreciate advice on how to best promote our services appropriately in the Manchester/Lancashire/West Yorkshire area using press releases and local information.
