Twiggy for Marks & Spencer

It’s not everyday I get invited to meet a fashion icon.

When I opened the email inviting me to meet, one of the first ever supermodels, Twiggy; I jumped at the chance.

The event included meeting Twiggy and attending a preview of her new collection for M&S. As part of the afternoon there was also a fashion show from Marks & Spencers archives through the decades from the twenties onwards.

There was a handful of lovely Northern bloggers and members of the M&S Sparks card community. Collecting points on your Sparks card unlocks treats, discounts and experiences- the Twiggy event was one of them. I’ve recently signed up to it and although it is another card in your purse, I’m finding it one of my most used. Monthly treats to choose from like deals on groceries or money off clothes.

marks and spencer archive leeds historyFor me Marks & Spencer is something that has always been there. The brand is ingrained in British culture. I suppose we take it for granted, remember what happened to BHS?

I think it is important for us to treasure that part of our culture and history. On the other hand it is incredibly important also, for the brand to keep up with the times, giving the customer what they want.

I think M&S are great at this, from developing clothing for children with special needs to bringing in British icons like Twiggy to design capsule collections.

If you cant already tell, I’m rather proud of being asked to work with M&S on this campaign. I thoroughly encourage you to visit the Marks & Spencer archives too, if you can.

The archive is housed in Leeds University (M&S was started in Leeds- who knew!). The university campus is choc-a-block full of gorgeous red-brick buildings mixed with contemporary architecture. Worth a follow on Instagram for their beautiful feed.

Me, Twiggy & Dash from Mode-Lily

Inside the Michael Marks Building, named after the founder, is where you’ll find this glorious gathering of British fashion and cultural history. The exhibition is free and permanent; open from 10-5 on weekdays.

The fashion show was a lot of fun and meeting Twiggy was lovely. She is incredibly down to earth. Her collection for Mark & Spencer promises to donate 30% of everything sold to the Breast Cancer Now charity.

As part of the campaign I got to choose a few bits from M&S and style them with a piece from the Twiggy collection.

I went for these jeans, which are a cropped skinny jean but have loads of give so they felt really comfortable to wear too, great for running around after the kids. I love the detailing down the sides, making them a little extra special.

how to wear double denim - twiggy collection for M&S

My whole outfit here is Marks & Spencer except for the neckerchief and my trusty Superga’s.

I’ve a real soft spot for double denim. The best way to pull it off, I think it works for me anyway, is to wear to different denim weights. The blouse here is almost a chambray denim and the jean are a heavier fabric. Also the loose shirt contrasted with the snug fit of the jeans helps the look feel contemporary rather than derivative.
