My pick of Septembers vintage events

I love September- its my birthday month which must have something to do with it, but I love the weather at this time of year. The crisp, brisk mornings and the sunny afternoons. There’s obviously that “back to school” feeling of fresh starts too- and the vintage scene comes back from its unofficial August break.

Some of these have already happened, seeing as I’m sharing this late- but worth a bookmark for next year… Please read on:

  • 6th-7th

Braderie de Lille Flea Market, France

This is the biggest Flea Market in Europe, which plays host to 10,000 exhibitors!! Can you imagine?! This event is spread of the full two days, at least giving you the opportunity to attempt to see it all.

No cars are allowed in Lille city centre whilst this event is on so it’s all on foot or public transport. There are also funfairs and loads of parties and entertainment during this time.

Safe to say this event is on my bucket list.

  • 6th-7th

International Autojumble, Hampshire

If you are into your vintage vehicles then this is the event for you, this event is jam packed with vintage and classic motoring ephemera including parts, clothing and literature. There is even cars for sale and auctions for collectors items.

York Does Vintage, Yorkshire

This event includes free vintage workshops and an authentic tea room, no wonder it has won Outstanding Customer service 2013 at the York tourist board awards.

York is a fascinating and picturesque city and this fair is in the perfect setting of the Merchant Adventurers Hall- very apt for a vintage fair I think.

  • 12-14th Goodwood Revival, West Sussex

Immerse yourself in the nostalgia at one of the biggest and best vintage automobile events in the UK. One of the reasons Goodwood Revival is so good is because so many visitors make a huge effort to dress in a period style- usually 1940’s through to 1960’s.

This year they are even putting on Dressmaking Workshops before the big event so you have time to actually make yourself something with a vintage look. See here for further details

Musical acts are yet to be confirmed at time of writing but if last year’s event is anything to go by the bandstand will be rocking the whole weekend.

Tickets start from £44 for adults.

Forth Birthday Bash Fair Vintage Village, Greater Manchester

This gem of a vintage fair in Stockport is celebrating its fourth birthday in September and it’s sure to be a day to remember. Multi award winning, it is really a must do on the vintage aficionado’s calendar now. It is known for only having traders who are selling goods at least twenty years old so you know that there will be no digging through lots of nineties (!!) things to get to what you want.

With the added bonus of a street food vendor or two, musical entertainment and a few other tricks up their dapper sleeves- don’t miss it. Entry £2.

  • 28th

Vintage Fashions & Textiles Fair, Manchester

This annual longstanding event existed way before vintage became cool and will no doubt continue way after. A real Mecca for vintage and antique clothing, fabrics and haberdashery, the traders that stand here are extremely passionate about the items they sell. All indoors so no Mancunian weather will foil the vintage search at this venue.

From hats, to tablecloths, to antique military uniforms to shoes from the 1920’s that are far too small to wear but oh what a delight to look at. Great for handbags, wedding dresses, compacts, walking canes, spats, brooches and hat pins- if it sparkles- it’ll be here.

Entry is £4- but well worth that bit extra if you want something really special.
