As I think some of you more regular and local to Manchester, UK readers are aware I also run VintageManchester.com, and just recently we held the second annual awards for those businesses and people who work within “vintage” in Manchester.
This year we were at a venue called Manchester 235 which is a plush city centre casino… I always try to theme the event to give guests a bit of fun deciding what to wear, so we went with a 1960’s Viva Las Vegas theme for this event. So casino’s, Vegas, showgirls, Ratpack, neon, cowboys, lots of gold and sparkle.
Being very late into my pregnancy and knowing I’d probably have swollen ankles in the evening- my outfit option was a Maxi Dress. I went for a Grecian black number from ASOS maternity that I’d snapped up from eBay over the summer for about £15.
I wore some gold gladiator sandals and loads of bangles and jewels- my look was inspired by Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra (1963).
Not all the images above are from Cleopatra, but I was hoping to encapsulate some of the ostentatious style of some of her outfits and headpieces.
Unfortunately a head piece didn’t materialise in time but Bethany from the Vintage Beauty Parlour did a stellar job of recreating one of the hairstyles from the film- using a false fringe I bought of eBay (again) and some of her repertoire of hair hair tricks. My make-up was a careful copy of the image above- bottom right.
And here is how my ode to Liz as Cleopatra turned out.
Pictured above with the lovely Rachael from The Social Butterfly, who works very closely with me on the awards.
And here a full length look with my bemused face as some of the winners get to know each other better 😉
