How to relax in the garden
As a parents to two small children, being outside in the garden has never actually been that relaxing.
It is easier as they get older and their own common sense prevails; But when they are small you are basically just chasing them around the garden- making sure they don’t hurt themselves on a stray bramble/thorny rose/fall in the pond/tip over the bird bath/grab a wasp etc.

It does depend on the child’s personality too. My eldest has a strong self preservation streak, and is rather cautious. Whereas my youngest (currently two and a half) is a bit wilder and has been known to eat things (snail anyone?) found in the garden and collect stones and leaves in her pockets. Thankfully she’s mostly past that now so we are not having to breathe down their necks quite as much as previously.
It means when we are in the garden now I can actually do a bit of gardening and not have to worry as much as before.
When we first moved in the garden had been really well tended (unlike the actual house) but with me having the kids at home and my other half working very long hours, the garden has suffered. It’s only now, when we can ease our grip on the kids, that things are falling into place with being able to do the garden (make it look half decent) and actually have the time to spend in the outdoors simply relaxing.
One thing that has help with the relaxing side of our garden is getting a chiminea. To be honest I was never really that into the idea of them, but perhaps as I’m now a grown up with kids of my own, the idea of sitting outside around a fire burning things whilst drinking gin and tonics is really appealing.
I was recently sent the Toledo Cast Iron Chiminea which we got to use for the first time recently. I even managed to tidy an area of the garden for it to go, so it’s not in the way of the kids meanderings.
To have a few moments around a real fire is definitely therapeutic, it perhaps being to do with our evolution. We need to have a few more go’s using our chiminea as we haven’t quite mastered it yet. But I’m really looking forward to the late summer evenings with this addition to our garden and I might even try cooking on it!
