My Berlin Plans

Its been about four years since I’ve been away on holiday with my girlfriends and even longer since going abroad. So we have planned a weekend trip to Berlin.

Berlin might not be the first place you’d think of when planning a girls holiday, but I’ve always wanted to go back after visiting years ago on a German school exchange. I was about 14 years old and it was probably the oddest and most awkward holiday I’ve ever been on. But that’s a story for another time perhaps. It did massively improve my German though!

Berlin is now a bit of a hipsters paradise, so I’m told. With masses of history this city is certainly a creative melting pot. Berlins heritage and culture are rich and diverse, and of course we hope to be soaking up some of that over a coffee and a bratwurst.

You can hire a vintage Trabant and tour the city but I’m not sure I trust us to be sensible and safe, (too giddy!!) we’ll probably leave that for the grown ups. We plan to do a bit of a Bowie pilgrimage too and just generally relax and take in the city.

We are going for a weekend in May, and I’m hoping to catch a vintage market whilst there. Although will obviously have to watch the baggage allowance on the return journey.

We are doing the whole AirBnB thing, a first for me so that’ll be interesting! The apartment we are staying in looks stunning and I’ll share it with you on my return.

I’m looking for suggestions and recommendations of what we just cannot miss whilst there, so please add yours in the comments or Tweet me @oldfashionedsus

If you know the best place for a gin cocktail in Berlin, or a great view from an off the beaten track spot, the best coffee/cake venue or even the perfect Instagram backdrop for all the hipster photos we’ll end up taking- then please do share!

Ahhh, the German exchange! Easily the WORST experience of my high school years, which had me swearing I’d never go back to Germany again (I got over it, the lure of both Berlin and Munich when I was old enough to appreciate it was too strong!)

Have only ever spent a couple of days in Berlin though so don’t have tons of tips – although I did take the open air tour bus (super touristy!) as I was on my own and would def recommend if you want to see loads of sights in a short space of time.. Totally not a hipster recommendation, I know! I wrote a few more (much cooler) tips up for Heart Home mag way back when.. will have to find out which issue for you to peruse xx

I worked in Berlin for a few days a couple of years ago but I didn’t get much time to see the city. I believe it’s seriously cool, though. My friend has an apartment there. I’ll ask if she has any suggestions and pass them on to you x
